  1. Sorry, I took a while to comment. This is a really good article. And I'm the first comment - other readers should feel ashamed!

    I think it's essential to make students feel comfortable writing in a style that suits them. These approaches, especially autoethnography in academic preparation, could be important on three levels - it allows students to express information and opinions with which they are comfortable and assured, it allows them to recognise and negotiate the parameters of appropriacy in their writing and it forces EAP staff to recognise how differences in the way Engish might be organised and expressed doesn't necessarily affect the 'correctness' of the language - the teacher-student relationships in such composition becomes a two-way relationship of negotiation and understanding (ideally). This could potentially spread to other teaching and marking if teachers better understood students' knowledge and ways of expressing themselves through creative work. Dialogic classrooms... ah, if only...!
